Principal's Report

Important Dates

With lockdowns over the past two years cancellations of events have been a far too frequent occurrence. So, it has been a challenge to keep across the constant re-scheduling. I ask you to take note of the dates in this week’s newsletter which are confirmed at the time of writing. Please refer to these for the next 5 weeks and do not hesitate to contact the school if you require clarification.

2022 Enrolments

This is another reminder to contact the office if your child is not returning to YPS in 2022. We are finalising classes and teachers for next year and this information is required as a priority. Likewise, we are receiving enrolments across all year levels and if you know of families moving to the area, please let them know we can now welcome visitors for tours onsite.

Exciting News for 2022!

I am excited to announce that we will have a whole school performing arts production next year! We are working with a reputable school production company and the performance will be held at the end of term 2. More information to come soon!

Step Up Session

On Friday December 10th at 2.30pm we will have our ‘Meet the 2022 teacher and team’ session for students in Years 1 to 6. This will run for one hour. Please know we are taking all preferences into consideration and ask you to support your child cultivate an optimistic outlook if they have worries that can come with change. We are here to support too.

Finbar

Kath Jones from Finbar has been announced as Sustainable Cities Awards 2021 finalist. The Perennial Compost Hub and Edible Ecosystem (located on the Kent St border adjacent to the Kitchen Garden) is funded by a grant from Environment Victoria to collaborate with Finbar, Yarra Primary School and the wider community to deliver a $10,000 project that is a social and environmental regeneration exercise which values the three ethics of permaculture: Earth Care, People Care and Future Care (or Fair Share).

Some of the features of the project are a community share shed/tool library, an edible ecosystem, food forest, compost, and worm farms to use and harvest from, natural and cultivated habitats, a seed bank and an Indigenous and beneficial plant library.

The natural asset instillation will increase water and fertility recharge and filter rainwater runoff, increase biodiversity belts in the urban environment, sequester carbon, provide a living laboratory with opportunities to participate in citizen science activities like the wild pollinator count (to be incorporated into our science program next year) and provide waste to resource opportunities composting two tonnes per week from households. Congratulations Kath and Finbar, we are thrilled to be a part of such an important sustainability initiative and service.

Creativity

Last week Matilda in Year 3 showed me her very well-coordinated face mask crafted from some old uniforms. I was impressed with her creativity, and I share with you this fine example of school pride and sartorial elegance!

Looking forward,

Saraid

Art News

It was so much fun getting back into the Art room after working from home!  All the classes enjoyed getting messy, the Preps were finally able to paint and decorate their colourful Bugs. Year 5/6 students completed their prints after creating their templates earlier in the year. It is lovely to see all their amazing works finally hanging on the wall!
